New Ford Focus ST

The evolution of the Focus ST goen on....... Ford will reveal all later this month at the Paris Motor Show with this new high-performance hot-hatch.

Packing a striking and appealing stance and a beefy 247bhp turbocharged engine, the ST will sit at the top of the all-new Focus range - that is until the new RS comes around.

The new model eatures a version of the all-new direct-injection 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine, replacing the old 2.5-litre five-cylinder unit, and offers greater power, and more efficiency.

New owners can be promised a 0-60mph time in less than six seconds and a top speed of155mph. A six-speed manual box should emit just 180g/km of CO2.

A huge mesh grille at the front incorporates the muscular bodykit complete with low sills. At the back is a roof spoiler and low rear bumper, allowing twin exhausts to exit through its centre.

The new ST won’t be available as a three-door, however, an estate could join the five-door for the first time.

No Irish release date or prices has been announced as of yet.

Bye Bye hot-hatch

The Honda Civic Type R will not go alone. Joining the hot-hatch in to the grave will be the Ford Focus ST . Like the British built Honda’s high revving 2.0-litre four pot, the Ford’s 2.5-litre turbo five-cylinder does not meet Euro 5 emission standards, which will come into force for all new cars in next year.

According to Autocar UK, who broke the news, other engines that are facing the chop for the same reason includes Alfa’s tuneful 3.2-litre V6, the Mazda RX-8′s rotary engine and the VW Group’s 5.0-litre V10 TDI engine. This will affect models like the Alfa Brera/Spider and the VW Touareg.

Ford may decide to resurect the ST in the future with a modern direct injection four-cylinder Ecoboost engine.

DS3 R3 off to good start

The Citroën DS3 R3 made its competitive debut at the Ulster rally last weekend and claimed the two-wheel drive and Group R victory titles on the Irish roads ending the event in fifth place overall.

Drivers, Bouffier and Panseri steadily built up their pace over the course of the weekend, but the DS3 R3 dominated its class right from the beginning. The opening day on Friday allowed the Frenchman to get used to the car and the conditions, and he got quicker and quicker with every stage. After the 53 miles that made up the first leg, Bouffier returned to parc fermé in seventh overall. During the morning loop of Saturday’s stages, the Citroën DS3 R3 continued its progress by making up another place. The crew ended on a high by setting four blistering stage times and claiming fifth overall at the finish.

Frédéric Bertrand, in charge of the customer competition department at Citroën Racing, said: “This great debut result has underlined our belief in the ample capabilities of the DS3 R3. The car has been reliable and we’ve not encountered any problems at all throughout the rally. Of course it proved to be extremely competitive as well, so now we just need to refine the set-up to suit all the different types of conditions that we might encounter. Sealing a result like this on the Ulster Rally is an important moment, because this is a very specialised rally that is well-known for pushing cars to the limit. The whole team has done a very good job and the crew drove a perfect rally. We have also been able to rely on the performance of BFGoodrich tyres. Putting all these elements together has resulted in an excellent fifth place at the finish. Given that this was only our first time out, it’s extremely encouraging for the future.”

Stig to reveal all...

Some say he's a god, and that a portion of his autobiography is written in Morse Code. All we know is, he's annoyed his bosses at the BBC by seeking to publish his memoirs. According to UKPA and ESPN, the tame racing driver has written the tale of his life and wants to share it with the world. The only problem is doing so would violate the confidentiality agreement in the Stig's contract. The BBC is also arguing that revealing his identity would ruin Top Gear for the millions of fans around the globe.

There are only a privileged few who know the Stig's real identity, including Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond. As the UKPA points out, each of those presenters has gone on to other money-making projects outside of the Top Gear band-wagon - leaving the poor Stig to take out his frustrations on the reasonably-priced car.

BUGATTI VEYRON SUPER SPORT SETS NEW LANDSPEED WORLD RECORD

Today,July 5, 2010 In the hot sun of Wolfsburg, Germany the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport achieved a new landspeed world record for production cars. In the presence of the German Technical Inspection Agency (TÜV) and a representative of Guinness Book of Records the Super Sport achieved an average top speed of 431 km/h.

FROM PRESS RELEASE : Saturday, 2 pm - Bugatti’s Pilote Officiel Pierre Henri Raphanel puts his helmet and gloves on, pulls the safety belts tight whilst the engineers check the car a very last time: tyre pressure, temperature, all systems green. Then the orange black Super Sport crosses the light barrier, from now on the time will be taken, within one hour the car has to drive from South to North and then in the opposite direction. No one but the driver is allowed to touch the car during this time. The tension rises. A few minutes later we can hear from the left side the sound of a starting jumbo jet coming closer towards us. First we perceive the headlights of the Veyron, then we can recognize the shape of the car, a loud wooosh…. and Raphanel dashes in top speed past us. The GPS-tachometer stops at 427, 933 km/h. Now the same procedure from the opposite direction. This time the car reaches 434, 211 km/h. As average top speed the representatives of the “TÜV”and Guinness generate a value of 431, 072 km/h (268 mph). This hit even Bugatti’s engineering team by surprise.

“We took it that we would reach an average value of 425 km/h,” explains Bugatti’s chief engineer Dr. Wolfgang Schreiber, “but the conditions today were perfect and allowed even more.

The climax of the Veyron series: the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport

Had a model been especially popular or highly successful in races, Ettore Bugatti’s customers often pushed the master to tease out of the engine a few horsepower more for their future car. Bugatti Automobiles SAS had been in a similar situation when their existing customers asked the company to not only design their second model optically differently but to also create a version with a sportier and more extreme driving experience. The result is a car with a uniquely high performance of 1,200-hp (882 kW) offering experienced drivers a whole new dimension of excitement, with a maximum torque of 1,500 Newton metres and a limited top speed of 415 km/h (to protect the tyres), but the technique of the Super Sport is identical to the record car. The first five Super Sports to come off the production line will constitute a special series of their own, with the same configuration as the landspeed record car.

The Super Sport is a consequent further development of the classic exclusive 1,001-hp Bugatti Veyron 16.4, launched in 2005. This model offers a stunning set of specifications, such as the twin clutch gearbox with seven speeds, the extraordinarily precise driving performance in bends and excellent stability when braking and accelerating.

Continuous work in extreme performance ranges lead to constantly new conclusions, which enabled the engineers at Bugatti to develop the Veyron into a direction in which the driver can reach new dimensions. Every modification is designed to produce an even more powerful car for an agile ride. Four enlarged turbochargers and bigger intercoolers have been used to boost the power of the 16-cylinder engine, and the chassis has been extensively redesigned to maintain safety at extreme speed - thanks to slightly raised main-spring travel, stronger stabilisers, and new shock absorbers with a complex architecture originally developed for racing cars. This gives noticeably more precise control of the wheels and the car as a whole. With lateral acceleration of up to 1.4 G and improved interaction between the tyres and the intelligent all-wheel drive system, the Super Sport offers perfect handling and even more powerful acceleration of 1,500 Newton metres on corner exits.

The body has been fine-tuned to improve aerodynamic efficiency and maintain perfect balance in every situation, while the new fibre structure of the all-carbon monocoque ensures maximum torsion rigidity and passive safety – at reduced weight. The skin is made entirely of carbon-fibre composites, and the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport is available in 100 per-cent clear-lacquered exposed carbon on request.

Dynamic exterior

Every detail of this car, and not just its use of advanced motorsport technology, harks back to the pioneering spirit of company founder Ettore Bugatti. This brilliant designer came from a family of artists, and his philosophy was always to combine mechanical perfection and exterior beauty. This ethos remains alive and well at the company, and the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport is wholly unmistakeable, with every external modification serving to coax greater performance from the car.

The Super Sport’s flat, elongated silhouette is immediately recognisable. The 16-cylinder engine gets its air from two NACA ducts set into the roof, rather than from scoops above the engine. The front air intakes have been expanded and reshaped, with the lower one extending elegantly around the sides to the wheel arch. The revised back looks sportier due to the double diffuser and a centrally arranged exhaust system.

Bugatti has a tradition of making super-sport versions of successful models, usually with racing chassis and supercharged engines. These cars were considered as true racing machines for diehard Bugatti devotees. The most successful were the type 55 and type 57S; only around forty of each were built.

Bugatti Automobiles has sold 260 Veyron and 35 Grand Sport by now, of which 249 Veyron and 22 Grand Sport had been delivered. The Super Sport will begin production this autumn at Molsheim along with the Veyron and the Grand Sport. The first five cars - known as the World Record Edition – are in a special black exposed carbon and orange finish and have already been sold.

The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport will appear for the first time in public in California at the Pebble Beach Concours week end in mid August and will feature at Quail Meadow, Laguna Seca and on the concept lawn of the Pebble Beach Concours.

MOST ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY ŠKODA EVER HITS UK SHOWROOMS

Škoda have released their most environmentally friendly car ever - the Fabia Greenline II and will go on sale in the UK next week.

The second generation Greenline is powered by a new three-cylinder turbocharged 1.2 TDI CR 75bhp DPF common rail (high-pressure direct injection) engine which returns83.1 mpg and CO2 emissions of 89g/km, which means the Fabia Greenline II is in VRT band A.

The introduction of a stop-start system helps the small Škoda to achieve a range of 1,500 kilometres from a 45 litre tank of fuel.

Other technologies introduced on the Greenline II which improve fuel economy are energy recuperation; which uses the vehicles kinetic energy for battery recharging, a gear recommendation system, which helps the driver make optimum use of the engine’s potential, a lowered and aerodynamically-covered chassis and low-rolling resistance tyre.

Lets hope to see the Fabia Greenline II here soon........

How many laps of the Bristol Motor Speedway will a V6-powered Ford Mustang run on one tank of fuel ?

How many laps of the Bristol Motor Speedway will a V6-powered Ford Mustang run on one tank of fuel? Ford is about to find out as part of a marketing effort for the car, which got new V6 and V8 powertrains for the 2011 model year.

Ford thinks it can do at least 1,000 laps of the half-mile track at Bristol. It's running a contest at www.mustang1000lapchallenge.com. Those who correctly guess the number of laps run will be put in a draw to win a Mustang.

If you're thinking of taking a stab at the contest, here a few numbers to consider:

-- The 2010 Mustang V6 has a highway fuel economy rating of 31 mpg.

-- The Mustang's fuel tank holds 16 gallons, according to Ford. That would give it a theoretical range of 496 miles.

-- The Bristol track measures 0.533 mile. So, 1,000 laps would equal 533 miles.

On the face of it, that would leave the Mustang about 37 miles, or just more than 2 gallons of fuel, short of running lap No. 1,000.

But the Ford team has held back on important piece of information--how fast will the Mustang lap the track?

The EPA says the highway fuel economy rating represents "a mixture of rural and highway driving in a warmed-up vehicle, typical of longer trips in free-flowing traffic."

There won't be much traffic on the Bristol track to slow the Mustang down, so you figure the 31 mpg rating comes from driving the car in the range of 55-70 mph. At the same time, there won't be any traffic to obstruct if the Mustang runs slower than 55 mph to boost its fuel economy. Ford also hasn't said if it will run the car with the windows closed and use of air conditioning and other accessories turned off or with minimal use--techniques that will boost fuel economy.

The run starts Wednesday morning............................

Franchitti Savors Sweet Second Indianapolis 500 Victory

Fifty years ago, a wreath was placed around Jim Rathmann’s neck in Victory Circle at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to start another Indianapolis 500 tradition.

Dario Franchitti, a motorsports historian, savors the heritage of the Speedway and soaks up the ceremony of the 500 Mile Race, which celebrates its centennial in 2011.

So the Scot especially has enjoyed the customs during his two trips to Victory Circle. Though both wins have come under caution, the swig of milk (a tradition started in 1936) still tastes as sweet.

Franchitti handed Target Chip Ganassi its fourth Indy 500 victory in a dominating performance under a searing sun (90 degrees at the green flag) and worldwide spotlight – 45 years after his hero, Jim Clark, won at Indy.

“This tastes just as good the second time,” said Franchitti, who in 2007 won the race shortened 34 laps because of rain. “To come back from a year away and win the championship and then win the Indy 500 it just means so much.”

The No. 10 entry led 155 of the 200 laps, inheriting the point for the final time on Lap 192 when pole sitter Helio Castroneves ducked into the pits for a splash of 100 percent fuel-grade ethanol.

Dan Wheldon was reeling in the reigning IZOD IndyCar Series champion with three laps remaining, closing to 2.9 seconds when a half-lap behind the Nos. 37 and 24 cars of Ryan Hunter-Reay and Mike Conway touched wheels, sending Conway’s car slamming into the catch fence between Turns 3 and 4. The yellow flag flew and Franchitti – with the Honda engine purring with only 1.6 gallons of fuel left – was able to basically coast to the twin checkered flags.

“Up until 10 laps to go, I was pretty relaxed,” said Franchitti, who made his final pit stop on Lap 163. “Then all hell broke loose with fuel savings and all. I just needed to know what the other guys were doing. If they were saving more than me, they were doing something special here.”

Conway was transported to Methodist Hospital for X-rays, while Hunter-Reay and Ana Beatriz (also incidentally involved) were checked and released from the infield care center. Hunter-Reay will, however, have surgery June 1 on his left thumb, which he injured in a pit lane incident.

“It became a fuel race toward the end and I had no idea how much I had left in the tank, and it came down into Turn 3 and it just died,” Hunter-Reay said. “The car died and that’s when Mike latched over me. That’s probably one of the toughest races I’ve ever had.”

Seven different IZOD IndyCar Series teams were represented in the top 10. There were 13 lead changes and nine caution periods.

Wheldon, driving the No. 4 National Guard Panther Racing car, was the runner-up for the second year in a row. Panther has finished second for three consecutive years (in 2008 with Vitor Meira). After video review of the final lap incident and when the caution lights were activated, Marco Andretti was confirmed the third-place finisher and Alex Lloyd advanced 22 positions to finish a career-high fourth.

Scott Dixon, the 2008 race winner, finished fifth and Danica Patrick, who provided Internet fodder a week earlier with comments relating to her qualifying result (she started 23rd) finished sixth in the No. 7 GoDaddy.com car for Andretti Autosport.

Each of the Ganassi winners – Emerson Fittipaldi in 1999 (158 laps led), Juan Pablo Montoya (167) and Scott Dixon (115) – have dominated in their respective years. All have been the beneficiary of no or miniscule mistakes.

“It was a great day,” Target Chip Ganassi Racing managing director Mike Hull said. “It's what race teams work to achieve, to win this race. This is the biggest race in the world. Today we had great race drivers and great race teams. I don't know what the head count is (at the Speedway), but I think they were treated to a great show.

“What we had to employ today was everything we do as a race team. We had to employ setup, speed, strategy, and understanding fuel after different times during the race. That's what we do well as a team. We just try to be consistent in being able to do that.”

If the final caution didn’t interrupt the flow, Wheldon said he figured to have an opportunity to overtake Franchitti because he was saving fuel early on in the final stint (also pitted on Lap 163). Franchitti’s team owner saw it another way.

“I don’t think he could have picked us off, but I think he could have passed us,” Chip Ganassi countered. “A lot of those guys are kicking themselves because they ended up with fuel left over at the end of the race. The worst thing you want to do is have some control over the fuel either with a switch or the 'push to pass' button.

“The worst thing you can do, and we've done it, is come up second in this race or third and have fuel in your tank that you didn't use, you could have used more of it. But that's this race. That's what it's like when you go into the last three laps or two laps and there's a yellow, white flag and then there's a yellow.”

Franchitti joins a list of two-time winners that includes Fittipaldi, Al Unser Jr. and Arie Luyendyk. Now he sets his sights on matching three-time winners Castroneves, Louis Meyer, Wilbur Shaw, Mauri Rose, Johnny Rutherford and Bobby Unser.

“Those guys are legends,” he said. “I said the other night, ‘I'm just a driver, those guys are legends.’ I'm so lucky to be drive for Chip and Team Target, getting in good cars, especially having gone away after we won in '07. To be invited back was pretty cool. To have won a championship and an Indy 500, I didn't expect any of this. I said before, I expected to be retired by the time I was 35 (he turned 37 on May 19). This is all bonus and it's pretty cool.”

Castroneves, who last pitted on Lap 155, picked up the point when Dreyer & Reinbold Racing’s Justin Wilson came in for the final time on Lap 189. But his attempt to become the fourth four-time winner would have to wait until next year.

“Well, we always say the one that makes the fewest mistakes wins the race and I made one that put us too far back,” said Castroneves, who checked in ninth (one spot behind Team Penske teammate Will Power). “We were fighting understeer and oversteer all day but we were still there fighting at the end and we still managed a top-10 result. Congratulations to Dario. Those guys were on it today and they deserve to be Indy 500 champions.”

Alex Tagliani of first-year entrant FAZZT Race Team finished 10, and Tony Kanaan charged from the 33rd starting position to 11th in the Team 7-11 car. Graham Rahal, competing for Rahal Leterman Racing was 12th and Mario Romancini of Conquest Racing was the highest-placing rookie in 13th.

the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS

The time: 7 minutes 18 seconds on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife.
- The power: 620 hp.
- The weight: 1,370 kilograms in road trim with all fluids on board.
- The car: the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS.
- World debut at the Moscow Auto Show on August 25th 2010

The GT2 RS is the fastest and most powerful road-going sports car ever built in the history of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart and marks the summit in the 911 range. With power up by 90 hp and weight down by 70 kilograms in comparison with the prior 911 GT2, the new 911 GT2 RS has a weight-to-power ratio of just 2.21 kilos per horsepower, by far the best power/weight ratio in its class.

Obviously, these are the ideal ingredients for an ultra-high-performance sports car with supreme agility, combined with truly blistering performance on the road and, of course, exemplary Porsche Intelligent Performance attributes. This manifests itself in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions being lower by approximately 5 per cent to 23.7 mpg (equal to 11.9 ltr/100 km) and 284 g/km versus the 911 GT2, despite the extra power and performance.

.The six-cylinder boxer engine is boosted by two turbochargers with variable turbine geometry (exclusive to Porsche in its combination with a petrol engine) and drives the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. Sports tyres measuring 325/30 ZR 19 and developed especially for the 911 GT2 RS convert this massive power into equally massive performance and acceleration on the road: 0 - 62mph (100 km/h) in
3.5 seconds, 0 - 124mph (200 km/h) in just 9.8 seconds, and 0 - 186mph (300 km/h) in 28.9 seconds.

Equally supreme stopping power on this ultra-high-performance sports car is assured by the PCCB composite ceramic brakes fitted as standard. Appropriate longitudinal and lateral dynamic chassis control is ensured by the sporting RS set-up of the springs, Porsche Adaptive Suspension Management (PASM), anti-roll bars, as well as the engine mounts and PSM Porsche Stability Management.

In its exterior styling, the new 911 GT2 RS stands out clearly from the
911 GT2 through the use of carbon-fibre-reinforced (CFR) components
in distinctive matt-black surface finish. At the front, the new, wider
911 GT2-style light-alloy wheels with centre locking are shrouded by flared wheel arches. ”GT2 RS“ model designations give further differentiation on the doors and rear engine cover. The upgraded front spoiler lip and the rear spoiler lip are also made of CFR and display a surface carbon finish. The rear spoiler lip is now 10 millimetres higher to ensure the right aerodynamic precision, as well as extra downforce.

.From behind the wheel of the 911 GT2 RS, the flair of sporting performance continues. Featuring lightweight bucket seats made of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic – again in carbon surface finish - and lightweight interior door panels with door opening straps, the high octane ambience is sustained. The basic interior colour is black, contrasting attractively with red alcantara upholstery on the seat centre sections and the roof lining as well as segments on the steering wheel rim, gearshift and handbrake lever.

Limited to just 500 units worldwide, the 911 GT2 RS will be available in the UK from September 2010 priced from £164,107. Further specifications and technical details will be confirmed nearer to launch.

Fitted to every 911 GT2 RS is a Porsche Vehicle Tracking System (VTS), a sophisticated vehicle security package approved to Thatcham Category 5 standard, and customers will also be able to explore the potential of their new car by participating in a complimentary course at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone.

Porsche Cars Great Britain Press Release 12 May 2010
